Documentary screening of “A Strike and an Uprising,” with director Anne Lewis.
A documentary about two events: The San Antonio pecan shellers’ strike of 1938 and the Jobs With Justice march led by Nacogdoches cafeteria workers, groundskeepers and housekeepers in 1987.
From Our Friends in the New Orleans Democratic Socialist of America:
“The Labor Standing Committee (of DSA New Orleans) is organizing a film
screening on Friday November 30th at 7:00pm at the Zeitgest theater on OC
Haley.
We will be showing an experimental documentary titled “A strike and an
Uprising (in Texas)” with the director Anne Lewis in attendance. The movie
covers the San Antonio pecan shellers¹ strike of 1938 and the Jobs With
Justice march led by Nacogdoches cafeteria workers, groundskeepers and
housekeepers in 1987 in a contemporary and experimental style. Come early
for refreshments and conversations with fellow socialists and workers.
There will be no admission cost at the event.
The grand history of Southern labor struggles is virtually erased from
official narratives of the United States. This has allowed the ruling class
to mold and implement a new identity for the Southern worker: a white,
individualistic, and racist worker who despises unions. This conception
replaces a long history of workers uprisings where–one after the
other–Latinas, African-Americans and white workers in the South rose up
against the social order with very tangible class consciousness, albeit a
limited one.
These movements and their legacies are the foundations for a universal
Southern class unity where the struggle of one becomes the struggle of all.
Understanding these movements, how they transformed people’s lives, and why
they failed or became victorious is vital to the socialist struggle. The
Pecan Sheller’s strike of Latina workers in 1938 and the Jobs With Justice
march of African-American women in Nacogdoches in 1987 are two struggles the
Southern working class must reclaim as an integral part of our history.”
